Gabriela hails Congress approval of 100-day maternity leave bill
The bill’s approval is the result of more than a decade of mobilizations and lobbying efforts of Gabriela.
Viva Salud’s Philippine partner, Gabriela, hailed the approval of the bill 100-day maternity leave by the members of the House of Representatives.
The bill’s approval is the result of more than a decade of mobilizations and lobbying efforts of Gabriela to press lawmakers to protect the rights and welfare of working women by institutionalizing a mechanism to expand their maternity leave period.
"This is historic as this is the first time that the expanded maternity leave bill hurdles all the stages at the House of Representatives since we first filed the measure ten years ago. We congratulate various women's groups and partners of Gabriela Women's Party for tirelessly pushing the Lower House to act on the 100-day maternity leave bill," said Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas, one of the authors of the said bill.
Gabriela said around 15 million female workers in the government and private sector stand to benefit from the measure and that the passage of the bill is a recognition of the productive role of women in the economy and an upholding of their right to maternal health enshrined in the Constitution.
Current laws in the Philippines allow women to take 60 days of maternity leave which is extremely inadequate and considered among one of the shortest maternity leave periods in the world, as per the International Labor Organization (ILO) convention.
The bill also stipulates that female workers will be entitled to the maternity leave coverage regardless of civil status. It also guarantees non-diminution of benefits and security of tenure to all women who demand maternity benefits provided by the measure.#
